5  Less Crowded Beaches in South Gyeongsang-do, Korea

A tropical paradise isn’t what usually comes to mind when you think of South Korea, but it certainly should be. With the western, eastern, and southern borders bound by water, South Korea has miles of beautiful beaches to choose from. From sandy beaches, to pebble beaches, and even a few with surfable waves, ocean lovers are guaranteed to find an attractive place to relax along the coast during their summer holidays.

And, now that rainy season is coming to an end, it’s time to hit the beach and check out that coastal view! Unfortunately, everyone else in South Korea will likely have the same idea. In and around South Gyeongsang province, domestic and international tourists tend to crowd the spectacular beaches in big cities like Busan. If you go to Haeundae Beach, for example, you’ll have to wade through a sea of beach umbrellas just to dip your toes in the ocean.

Luckily, there are plenty of lesser-known beaches you can venture to to get away from the big crowds and have a more relaxing vacation experience. Here are 5 of the less touristy beaches in and nearby South Gyeongsang province.

1. Ilsan Beach, Ulsan

When you visit Ilsan Beach, you might feel as though you’ve been transported to another country. The bright blue water contrasts against the green coast in a way that’s very reminiscent of South East Asia. There are fishing boats in the harbor and plenty of sand to relax on. The cliff along the side is home to the scenic Daewangam Park and lighthouse if you feel like taking a walk. The best part? Ilsan is located right in the middle of bustling Ulsan Metropolitan City. You can just hop off a bus and right onto a beach!

To get to Ilsan Beach, take an intercity bus to Ulsan Intercity Bus Terminal. From there, take bus number 1401 to the Ilsan Beach entrance. While you’re visiting, be sure to eat at one of the many delicious raw fish (회) restaurants along the beach.

2. Jinha Beach, Ulsan

Also located in Ulsan is the beautiful Jinha beach. South of the city’s petrochemical industrial complex, Jinha beach has a more countryside vibe to it. During low tide, there is a small island down the beach that you can wade to and explore. Check the weather before you go! Jinha is famously windy, and due to its reliable trade winds, it’s the host to annual windsurfing competitions. It’s even been dubbed the top windsurfing spot in South Korea. Hot tip: There are fewer restaurants along the beach, so it might be a good idea to bring your own food if you’re a picky eater.

To get to Jinha, take bus number 2100 from the Ulsan Intercity bus terminal. While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the view and cafes at nearby Ganjeolgot.

3. Kangdong Beach, Ulsan

Also in Ulsan, Kangdong is a beautiful pebble beach that lies along the same coast as the more popular Jujeon beach. If you are the kind of person who likes to suntan, don’t worry! Kangdong also has sand closer to the sidewalk. Located amidst a small fishing village, Kangdong is a fantastic place to escape from the big city. If you like camping, this is a great spot to pitch a tent and relax for the night.

To get to Kangdong, take bus number 701 from the Ulsan city bus terminal. There are only a few coffee shops and seafood places directly along the beach, so you might want to bring some snacks of your own.

4. Gujura Beach, Geoje Island

Okay, so Gujura beach can get a bit crowded if the weather is nice, but you can definitely see why. A pristine sandy beach, crystal blue waters, and rolling mountains in the background. What could be better? And, if you’re interested in history, Gujura beach has an interesting past. It was originally used by the U.S. Army as a prisoner of war camp after the Korean war. The beach wasn’t open to the public until 1970.

Buses run from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Geoje Island daily and take about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Get off at Goheyon and take a local bus or taxi to Gujura beach.

5. Saryangdo Island, Tongyeong

If you REALLY want to evade crowds, consider taking a ferry to Saryangdo island. You’ll definitely find a beach to yourself out here. According to the locals, the Saryangdo beach only sees about 100 people per day at the peak of the tourist season. This beautiful sandy beach on the fishing island has a fantastic view of mountains. If you stay the night, consider hiking along the island ridge for some exercise.

To get to Saryangdo, take a bus to the Tongyeong bus terminal. From there, you can take the local bus 670 or 675 to the Gaochi (가오치) terminal and hop on the ferry to Saryangdo. If you’re looking for beachfront pensions, the owners here are lovely and will guide you around the island.

Have a great time!

These are just five of the many beautiful beaches South Korea has to offer. So, if you’re stuck here for your summer vacation, why not explore? You’ll probably be surprised at the places you find!
